Mumbai May 2, 2020

The MahaVikas Aghadi (MVA) government has been putting war-footing efforts from day one to overcome the COVID-19 pandemics. Though Mumbai has been hit hard by the pandemic, efforts to control it have been somewhat successful, with the initial COVID-19 mortality rate being 9 %, which has come down to 3.5%. The efforts will continue to bring COVID-19 under control, said Aslam Sheikh, Minister of State for Textiles and Guardian Minister of Mumbai.

Addressing a press conference on the digital platform through the Zoom app, Sheikh said that a large number of tests were carried out because of the coronavirus crisis in Mumbai. So far, 76628 tests have already been conducted in Mumbai. While 6879 people are still infected and 1364 people have already been treated and sent home. A total of 290 people died due to the virus in Mumbai so far.

Considering the population of Mumbai, a large number of quarantine facilities have also been set up. In areas like Dharavi, Malvani, Ganpat Patil Nagar, 6500 people were tested and 240 patients were found positive of COVID-19. Senior citizens who already have diabetes, high blood pressure, and other ailments are required special care when dealing with the coronavirus. In containment zones of Mumbai, efforts are being taken to prevent senior citizens from getting infected to coronavirus. There is a need for more testing in containment zones for which the centre is pursued. The Rapid Action Team has been set to carry out ward-wise testing in hotspot areas of Mumbai. For the isolation of slum dwellers, schools and other buildings have been taken over and set up for the quarantine facility.

“In Dharavi, more than 1300 tests have been done by visiting their around 1.25 lakh homes. Three lakh people who came to Mumbai by air from abroad have been investigated. There were also complaints about dialysis patients but now special arrangements have been made for them at the Seven Hills Hospital,” informed Shaikh.

The number of migrant laborers in Mumbai is around 6.5 lakh. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is working to provide them with two meals a day but these laborers, who are living in small rooms, now want to go to their village. The work of collecting information of such laborers is underway, and all the police stations in Mumbai, the revenue department are working for it.

“Details of migrant workers like their native state and city are being collected and phase-wise they will be sent either by train or bus whichever is suitable. All such workers will be informed on their mobile after all the arrangements are made,” added Shaikh.

The fisheries business has hit due to the lockdown. The state government had already allowed fishing in the state but tonnes of fish were spoilt due to lack of transport and closure of markets, said Fisheries Minister Aslam Sheikh.
